I’d have to listen to the lyrics again I haven’t listened to this stuff since we recorded it [laughs]. That was another one that I demoed in my garage and it sort of kind of a thrash riff based around it and it goes into a kind of sludgy verse line. But the recording of that one was about getting the drummer on page with that and he was really stoked to try to dive into that one and kind of a fast [mimics sound - m’but m’but] beat and then that one has a really interesting breakdown in the middle. I wanted to do a middle eight that didn’t necessarily have a guitar solo, I thought maybe it could be a vocal breakdown for Corey. I ended up with this really sort of ethereal, very layered guitar sound, almost like 180 degrees different from what the rest of the song is. It just seemed to work and I’ve never heard a song that combines all the different elements in that way before so I wanted to do my best to try to bring that together for the record. When I demoed that in my garage I played the bass on it, I did like this Roger Waters [Pink Floyd] guitar solo over that little bit and I really dug that. With this album, we’re really keeping Paul in mind with everything and I thought there should be something that showcased the bass guitar at some point so that was kind of it. Corey: AOV stands for ‘Approaching Original Violence’. The album as a whole is the story of the last four years for this band, so AOV is basically about looking at each other and dealing with a lot of the issues that we’ve had, to try to bury those hatchets, so we can get back up on our feet. Because you can’t stand together until you fi gure out what the issue is. You have to get on the same page to be able to move forward – it’s just really about fi nding a way to stand on that common ground and not only stand on it, but take that territory back and guard it as your own.” PT) Jim: Acquiring... alguma coisa... violence. Eu acho que é o que significa? Eu tenho que ouvir a letra de novo. Eu não ouvi o material desde que gravamos [risos]. Essa foi outro que eu montei a demo na minha garagem e é um tipo de riff thrash de base em torno e entra em uma espécie de linha de verso lamacenta. Mas a gravação dessa era para colocar o baterista em sintonia com isso e ele estava realmente feliz por tentar mergulhar nela num tipo de batida rápida [imita o som - mbut mbut] e ela tem uma desacelerada de ritmo muito interessante no meio. Eu queria fazer uma ponte na música, que não necessariamente tivesse um solo de guitarra, eu pensei que talvez poderia ser um queda de vocal do Corey. Acabei com um som meio etério, em camadas, quase como um giro de 180 graus diferente do que o resto da música é. Me pareceu funcionar e eu nunca tinha ouvido uma música que combinasse todos esses elementos diferentes dessa forma antes, então eu queria fazer o meu melhor para tentar reuni-las numa gravação. Enquanto eu montava a demo na minha garagem eu tocava o baixo nela, eu fiz um pouco de algo do tipo Roger Waters [Pink Floyd] no solo e eu realmente me aprofundei nisso. Com esse álbum, nós realmente estamos mantendo Paul em mente com tudo e eu pensei que deveria ter algo que apresentasse o baixo, em algum momento, então foi meio que isso.
