Slipknot was the very first modern metal band I ever heard, and it was their self-titled album. I was young, 13 or 14 and lived a musically sheltered life. A friend of mine named Tom said Hey Josh, you might like this. and let me borrow it. It scared me. The music literally scared me and I buried it under some clothes in my closet until I returned it the next day. Thats not a joke. A few months later, I had grown off from punk into harder things like rock. He then gave me Mudvaynes LD 50 and for some reason... even though Slipknot frightened me, I LOVED this CD. LD 50 was soon my favorite album, and remains so to this day. At this point, I looked up Mushroomhead not long after and re-listened to Slipknot with a better viewpoint on music and a better understanding. My parents allowed me to listen to more music now, metal and rock. (I grew up religious) I had previously listened to Papa Roach, Limp Bizkit, and Link Park. My father had always been very encouraging with music and kept it in check (with edited and amended albums) while allowing me to explore my tastes. He was a fan of punk rock, and remains an avid Chixdiggit fan to this as do I. Hes a gigantic Beatles fan, but not one of those hipster people, a legitimate fan who loves music that changes and experiements so having that influence in my life was great. He didnt care for any of the new metal I was listening to, especially Mudvayne, Slipknot, and Disturbed. It was a very tumultuous few years before I realized I have no real genre of music and I Just listen to about everything, because I soon discovered Prince and everything changed. I never stick with one genre, I constantly change but my roots lie in Nu Metal. Nu Metal is so energetic, and hard, and fun and exciting. I absolutely love it.
