Slow Food Youth Network #SouthAfrica ~ I LOVE CAPE TOWN Currently - TopicsExpress

Slow Food Youth Network #SouthAfrica ~ I LOVE CAPE TOWN Currently our continental laws governing seed are being dissected in a series of meetings around the continent. There is a lot of legalese, a language most public members cannot speak or understand. Of course these laws are not REAL things, they are about policies, economies, frameworks. They do not physically prevent genes from adapting or a seed user from sowing seed. They do not prevent beans from producing pods or bees from pollinating flowers. This is all about patents, intellectual property and quite frankly, about power and control. It is exclusionary, problematic and will be detrimental for our biodiversity. Here is a brief overview: viacampesina.org/en/index.php/main-issues-mainmenu-27/biodiversity-and-genetic-resources-mainmenu-37/1518-african-peasants-reject-corporate-seed-laws-and-assault-on-peasant-seeds-and-food-sovereignty What does it mean for all of us? We need more Sovereign Seeds-Standing together for a GMO Free planet, more practise and habit in seed use. Reviving seed culture and telling our seed stories. Is this not indeed our direct link to our ancestry, whether familial or within the land? Most importantly, we need our African varieties, our natural landraces to continue to grow. We need SOLIDARITY, these laws affect the entire world but in #Africa they are trying to implement laws in a blanket manner, harmonising entire regions. Treating Lesotho as if it is the size of Algeria, treating Malawi as if it is as developed as South Africa. Putting the power in Africa much further north, out of Africa.
