Smallwood is a ancient name connected to the Anglo-Saxon tribes of Britain. The name is derived from the small township in which the family once lived. The township of Smallwood in the parish of Astbury in the county of Cheshire. First found in Cheshire where they held a family seat at Smallwood, some say before the Norman conquest of 1066. Randell Smallwood is one of the earliest known Smallwoods to arrive in America in 1623 when he landed in Virginia. Notables: William Smallwood (1732-1792) American planter, soldier and politician.
