Another related contingency: Im already convinced for my next book, going through the 1980s, that any Republican would have won, perhaps by greater margins, and that all the top candidates--Bush, Connally--and, of course, a minor ones, Phil Crane, was prepared to run as a conservative. Conservative movement activists were spread out among all these campaigns. Jude Wannisky was with Jack Kemp, David Keene, if memory serves, was with Bush, Laffer (I may be misremembering) with Connally, etc. Reagan was not required.
