Smart Meters Letters & Videos - June 24, 2014 Letters: [Lake Bluff, Illinois, USA] Opinion: Reject smart meters! by Nancy J. Thorner - Glencoe News - June 24, 2014: - glencoe.suntimes/2014/06/24/opinion-reject-smart-meters/ A “Smart Grid” is an electricity distribution network that utilizes “Smart Meters.” A “Smart Meter” is a wireless or hard-wired two-way communication device that connects your home or business and broadcasts your personal information and energy use habits to the electric grid company. Current analog meters have been safely used for decades. They still work just fine. ComEd, although lagging behind other states, is accelerating the deployment of Smart Meters here in Illinois. Presently ComEd is beginning the process of installing millions of digital electric meters throughout its northern Illinois service territory. In accordance with the 2011 state law, per a February, 2014 decision made by the Illinois Commerce Commission, ComEd customers might shortly expect the following: • Customers who refuse to have smart meters installed will be charged $21.53 a month. • If customers make the decision to refuse a (smart) meter now and incur monthly charges, this refusal is simply deferring the inevitable. Common sources of electromagnetic or EMF exposure include smart meters . Based on studies linking wireless radiation to brain tumors, the World Health Organization (WHO) has classified wireless radiation as a 2B carcinogenic. Numerous accounts likewise exist of smart meter fires and explosions. Com Ed is blind-siding its customers by installing digital meters that are harmful, dangerous, invasive and unlawful by claiming that installation is mandatory. What’s at stake is our basic right to life, health, choice and freedom. Say NO to smart meters! — Nancy J. Thorner, Lake Bluff [Maple Ridge, BC] Letter: Gabriola Effect amusing, but misses point against smart meters by Ron McNutt - Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Times - June 23, 2014: - mrtimes/opinion/letters/letter-gabriola-effect-amusing-but-misses-point-against-smart-meters-1.1155321 (Please Comment & - mrtimes/opinion/contact-us) Dear Editor, I enjoyed the “Gabriola Effect” letter [Gabriola effect works on the mind, April 15 Letters, TIMES]. The writer gets A-plus for dramatic writing, but unfortunately, F for research. The smart meter does not transmit once per day for 30 seconds as stated, but between 9,600-190,000 times per day, in millisecond bursts that occur 24/7/365. The signal can carry for up to three kilometres and penetrate the ground up to three feet. Signals from hundreds to thousands of meters in your area will reach your home, adding to the cumulative effect from other sources such as cell towers and wi-fi. The statement, “the health risk is none,” shows a dangerous ignorance of warnings from some of the world’s top scientists. While you may not be able to feel RF radiation, the cells in your body typically react to it at levels far below Canada’s obsolete Safety Code 6. Many have reported health issues after a newly installed smart meter becomes operational, due either to RF radiation or dirty electricity. It is disingenuous and unhelpful to ridicule and dismiss the adverse effects reported in good faith by citizens. Smart meters are part of a highly profitable $2-trillion industry that is hell-bent on ensuring that you live in a wireless world, whether you want to or not. Wittingly or not, the Gabriola Effect writer employs the industry modus operandi: the best defence is a good offence. Scientists who demonstrate harm are made examples of by being defunded and their careers destroyed. Citizens who raise warnings are labeled lunatics. If the technology is so safe, why would these extreme reactions be necessary? Industry is well aware that wireless cannot be proven safe. For this industry, hell would be if you woke up tomorrow and demanded proof of safety. Amusing though it may be, the Gabriola Effect cannot explain away very real issues or offer comfort to people suffering their effects.
