So I am doing a treatment that not many other people in the state are doing... literally just a handful in the country. We had so many people with nerve pain or RSD or Fibromyalgia or severe depression or PTSD that we couldnt seem to get better, I made the decision about 6 months ago to start offering people IM ketamine injections. Its not necessarily something that we advertised because I was worried about who we might attract to the practice, but I have been offering it to people that I think may get some benefit. As we approach our 50th ketamine injection in clinic, I can see that this is an underused approach to treating pain and psychiatric problems. It doesnt work for everyone, and while I have been selecting the hardest cases that no other approach seems to help, we are having almost 50% success with it in terms of drastic improvement to the ones it helps. 50% is actually pretty amazing chances for someone who suffers from debilitating pain or depression and wishes they wouldnt wake up because of their disease. I know that in some places this amazing medication is abused and has a bad reputation, but I think I am prepared to say that this has changed my practice probably forever. I can get a HARD pain or psychiatric case and look at that person with confidence that I may have that one hard to find treatment that will restore balance to their life. While the national epidemic of drug abuse and unintentional overdose deaths flares around us, I would ask everyone not to judge certain things too quickly. This is a life saving intervention for some people. I am as I always have been dedicated to my patients safety first.
