So I disregarded everything -- all the warnings, all the bad to middling reviews, all the Facebook sneers -- and went to see The Counselor. A couple of snap judgments: It is a very talky film. Even with all the talk, I found it hard to follow; I didnt dare go for a winky tink, not even once, because I never would have followed what I was able to follow had I missed even a couple minutes of it. I dont think Cormac McCarthy should write the screenplays of movies based on his work. All that said, there is a scene in which Cameron Diaz, who is scary in this film, makes love to a car while her boyfriend, the GREAT Javier Bardem, is in it; his version of the event is one of the most spectacularly descriptive passages I have ever heard in a film and it had me laughing out loud. His dialogue about this was my favorite part of the movie, which may tell you something. However -- I think the actors (Fassbender, Cruz, Diaz, Bardem, Pitt and Rosie Perez and Ruben Blades, so great to see those last two again, even in their small roles) did the best they could with the murky plot, philosophical ramblings, general sense of dread and graphic violence. Ill also just say that I cant imagine that either the Texas or the Mexico department of tourism would be very happy with how they show up in The Counselor.
