So I finally had some time to sit down and watch the making of the Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime Watch and boy is it impressive. Patek celebrated its 175th anniversary this past week and released numerous watches like the chiming jump hour and world-timer. But that was just an appetizer compared the the 48 ounce porterhouse of a watch that would be the crowning jewel of their 175th year. The $2.5 million, painstakingly built, uber complicated piece of art (that should reside inside a museum for fear of just wearing it) Grand Master Chime Ref. 5175. The 5175 took approximately 8 years in research and development so naturally one would expect the finished product to have something like.... 20 complications, over 1,300 parts and a case that houses over 200 parts which is more parts than most run of the mill mechanical movements. All in all it is an unbelievable achievement in human engineering, craftsmanship, design, functionality and masterful art all rolled into one watch.
