So, I have been thinking about how welfare is crippling the state - TopicsExpress

So, I have been thinking about how welfare is crippling the state of IL, and largely the country as a whole. And I came to a realization. The welfare system is flawed in that it it provides for people without judgement, because why not. Im not against the idea of welfare as an option. It is a good thing, if it is correctly monitored and people dont abuse it. Well, apparently abuse is a subjective term, because if you were to tell me that the government needs to provide everyone who doesnt have a job with as much, if not more, income as a job working minimum wage, then I will call you a liar everyday of the week. My opinion is clear on this issue, and that is if this country is to recover our position as the worlds greatest superpower, we need reform. The fact that people make a living off of welfare and gov. assistance is absolutely ridiculous in the first place. I understand it is there to help, I do. The problem is that there are lazy people who just dont want to get a job, so they live off of the money they can get from the government. The best analogy I can make for welfare is this: If you break your leg, you get crutches, and they help you get by until your leg is well enough to use again. Welfare should be just the same. If something unfortunate happens, then you should be able to use it until the situation is able to remedy itself, but it should ONLY be enough to get by. It should be a crutch, not a wheelchair. Because, if the government keeps paying for a wheelchair, why should I work to remedy the situation when it is easier to just be content in this totally free wheelchair. Sure, it isnt the perfect analogy. But that is basically what is happening. So what is to be done you may ask. Well the remedy is simple, NO MORE HANDOUTS. Design a system to monitor who gets welfare, for how long, and how much they need/receive. A simple way to monitor who gets it in the first place is a basic aptitude test in the application process, and references. That would fix some of the problem and help differentiate between the people who are just falling on hard times and the people who dropped out of high school and just want it because they are lazy and do nothings. The next step, regulate how much people receive. Lets put it this way, would you be more inclined to find a job if the your bills were all getting paid or not. I understand that the job market is tough, but if you are TRULY desperate, then there is something out there. So lets try this, when somebody first applies, pay them just enough to afford their basic necessities. After a month or two, start to steadily decrease the ammount of assistance. I simple refuse to believe that I am the only person who sees the problem the current G.A. systems cause, and I also dont believe that I am the only one who sees a potential solution. So who is it only getting worse with the new healthcare programs...
