So, I have, in the past, been asked why I do not take x-rays. 1) I work from home and dont want my entire house exposed to radiation multiple times per day, 2) the cost to lead line the walls to prevent radiation exposure would require lots of construction, time and money, 3) I do not do a technique that requires the use of x-Ray (upper cervical or gonstead), 4) x-rays can be very misleading. Take a look at these two films of the neck. In the first one, the neck looks straight. In the second one, it looks curved like it should be. Guess what? These x-rays are taken of the same person 4 minutes apart, only because the radiologist didnt include enough of the skull in the first one to see some structures they like to look at. So, if your Chiro only takes one film and bases your treatment off of that one film, whos to say they are treating you properly? What if your MD only looks at that first film and decides that you MUST have some sort of disc or nerve root issue due to the straight neck? So they send you for an MRI and expose you to more potentially harmful imaging. Now dont get me wrong. X-rays are wonderful for showing the one thing that would tell me NOT to adjust you....a fracture. Otherwise, my hands are more reliable at finding subluxation, adjusting subluxation, and allowing your innate intelligence to be fully expressed. Hope that answers your question if youve been wondering why I dont take X-rays.
