So I have talked a little about Insulation, once this has been addressed the next port of call is the source of your energy production and its control. If your boiler is okay and what I mean by okay is that it works and it is serviced regularly, what we have to then look at is the control of the boiler. If you have no controls for your heating system then you are pouring good money down the drain. Every boiler has a primary temperature control on it. All this does really is to tell your boiler to turn itself off when it reaches the temperature that is set. It will heat up your Hot Water System and all the radiators in the house and keep heating them until its own temperature stat tells it to stop. But what if you don’t want the bedrooms heated till night time and you want your kitchen heated in the morning, you want hot water for morning and evening showers but you don’t need to heat the water during the day, or you just want hot water to wash the dishes because you use an electric shower, you only want the lounge heated after 4pm because no ones home until 5. With Heating Controls you can do all of this and more without the expense of changing your boiler. I know some will say “well Peter you should have a high efficiency boiler installed” and they are right, but what if you can’t afford the extra €2,000 to €3,000 installation of a new boiler and your old one has been working fine all these years and you have it serviced every year and it has never let you down. No matter how efficient the boiler is, even if it is the latest top of the range Rolls Royce of boilers, it has to have and I repeat, has to have, Heating Controls installed with it. With Heating Controls you can have heat when and where you want it and how much you want. They are easy to install now because of wireless technology. Remember every Heating System is different , some may require a bit more or a bit less than others to retrofit, but it is a lot simpler than you would think. Using a 24/7 digital control panel, a couple of zone thermostats, a few motorized valves, a DHW thermostat, some thermostatic controlled radiator valves, a frost protector, some wire, some pipe and you’re in business. Once you have Heating Controls installed the boiler will only come on for what you have programmed it for. The programmers are very user friendly and the person who installs it for you will not only show you how it works but will program the system the way you want it. There is also a €400 grant from SEAI to go towards the cost of a Heating Controls upgrade. Also remember, something that is just as important as the topic we have discussed and that is to always use a registered and qualified contractor, and ask for brochures on the products they supply so you can compare like for like and shop around. If you have any queries just drop me a line.
