So, I just had the great misfortune of reading a series of articles about people around the United States who are being punished in some way for doing what most of us would consider to be the right thing, including a man who was fired for coming to the aid of a woman being attacked in a parking lot on his lunch break and a teenager who was punished for picking up a drunk friend from a party instead of letting her drive home. It would be easy to shake my inconsequential fist and say, What has society come to, but the fact is that I already know the answer: this is what society becomes when we let employers, schools, and governments act as the arbiters of everything we do. This is the inevitable consequence of our own inaction. Its only going to get worse because no one will do what actually matters to make it change.
