So I just saw something on TV that REALLY ticked me off (so naturally Im going to rant about it). So theres this show called Married At First Sight that passes itself off as a social experiment wherein so-called compatibility experts arrange for complete strangers to meet at the altar and be wed immediately. This mock of a social experiment goes on for six weeks, after which the participants report whether or not they think it worked and decide whether to stay married or file for divorce. Ok. Now I never watch reality TV and am of course aware that much of it is scripted. But seriously, the producers & writers and everyone else involved in the production of this show/debauchery clearly have no shame. And Im not just talking about the absurd travesty it makes of love, marriage, and intimacy, because believe me, if I had to go on about that it would probably result in a post long enough to cause Facebook to crash. The part that really irritates me is the gross message it sends for being an experiment done by experts. Theyre going to give these people SIX WEEKS to decide if the experiment was successful? If this were in any way a LEGITIMATE experiment, they would follow these couple for six YEARS, at least. People who are desperate, impatient, overly hopeful, or just plain curious can cite this show, Oh, I saw a tv show where it was scientifically proven...bla bla bla. And before you think, People arent THAT dumb, I can reach for more than enough examples to show you that they are. Not to make any theistic implications about this, but I want to share one other quick thought. Ive had people say to me that marriage is an institution that was designed by God. It this is really the case, then what this show does is the most heinous act of vandalism ever to be done to a great masterpiece in all of human history. Marriage is treated more and more like a joke. If my knowledge of the history of marriage is accurate enough, Id say we were on the right track maybe about a century ago (it wasnt perfect but it was moving in the right direction), but are now regressing into something horrid. Its turning into just something people can do if theyre bored. And if it isnt everything they wanted it to be, no problem, they can just divorce. Romance? Passion? Intimacy? Apparently these arent valuable in todays society. Feel free to share this if youre with me when I say that I still hope to someday have a REAL marriage.
