So, I just spent the last couple hours going through previous Tevis Cup records... then I called the Tevis office to confirm my findings.... Asali was the only Missouri Fox Trotter to finish this year, and she is the only MFT to have completed the traditional Tevis Cup ride since 1979. In 2011, there was one MFT who finished 118 out of 123 finishers, but in 2011, the Tevis Cup ride had to be altered due to snow in the high country. The 2011 Tevis Cup ride is referred to as the Backwards Tevis because riders started in Auburn, went down to Michigan Bluff, and then returned to Auburn. This means the riders did not do a point-to-point ride, did not complete the first 36 miles of the traditional route which is at the highest elevation and is the most technically difficult. In 2011, the riders also skipped the two most difficult canyons - Devils Thumb and El Dorado canyons. There is claim that the ride in 2011 was only about 85 miles (the Tevis office would not confirm this), rather than the true 100 miles of the traditional route from Lake Tahoe to Auburn. In addition, the 2011 Tevis Cup was held in October, in much cooler weather. The ride is traditionally held in July and August and is famous for its heat and dust. The 2011 Tevis had the highest completion rate and a completion time that was about 4 hours faster than what riders are able to finish the more difficult, traditional Tevis in. Thus, Asali has proven herself to be the only MFT on record to finish the traditional REAL 100-mile Tevis Cup ride since 1979 when a MFT named Levia Bliss completed in 20 hours.
