So... I just watched Whiplash the movie. Utterly preposterous bilge! It is to the jazz community what Drumline was to the marching community: sensationalised, inaccurate, highly annoying and totally irrelevant to its chosen subject matter. The central message seems to be that its completely ok to be an absolute tyrant as long as youre serving the purpose of making the drums go really really fast. Whats the purpose of these movies? They are only likely to appeal to people who know pretty much nothing about music education - or music in general for that matter. So is their purpose to attract new interest to the art, and if so, what kind of people are they likely to attract? Narcissistic, vindictive sociopaths? I was hoping to get back in with Conor Guilfoyle at some stage this year and get another block of lessons under my belt. Id be interested to see if he now keeps a bucket of ice water beside the hihat for plunging aching, bleeding hands into, or can I expect the same open, warm and nurturing environment I remember from him, and every other musical educator Ive crossed paths with over the years!? I actually have a headache after watching that movie. Need to listen to some jazz to unwind! :-) Sorry. Rant over.
