So I recognize my opinion may not necessarily agree with a majority of Husker fans, but overall I am okay with the firing of Bo Pelini. The timing may not have been my favorite. In my opinion we should have let him finish the season. Bo has done a ton of great things for us. He got the Huskers back on the map after the awful Bill Callahan experiment. He did a great job of helping us to find a Big Ten identity. I will seek to inform you as to why the firing is okay and after if you still disagree, dissenting opinions are welcomed. However, please do not attack me or anyone else. It is football and the bottom line is that is not the most important thing in the world. So, hear me out... 1) The number one reason I am completely okay with firing him is because the man has simply not won enough big games. However, it is not only the fact that we cannot win these kinds of games. In the really big ones like nationally televised, big bowl implications, we have been embarrassed. I have seen tweets saying things along the lines of Well, cant wait until we see Bo win a national championship somewhere else next year. I ask, what over the last seven years has led you to believe Bo could win a big conference game, let alone a national championship game. Here are some scores (both the good at the bad)... 2008 Nebraska vs. Missouri 52-17 L 2008 Nebraska at Oklahoma 62-28 L 2009 Nebraska at Va Tech 16-15 L 2009 Nebraska at Missouri 24-21 W 2009 Nebraska vs. Texas (Big 12 Championship) 13-12 L 2010 Nebraska vs. Texas (Texas was not good this year but we were number 5 in the country) 20-13 L 2010 Nebraska at Okie State 51-41 W 2010 Nebraska vs. Texas A&M 9-6 L 2010 Nebraska vs. Oklahoma (Big 12 Championship) 23-20 L 2011 Nebraska vs. Wisconsin 48-17 2011 Nebraska (number 9 in country) vs. Northwestern 28-25 L 2011 Nebraska at Michigan 45-17 L 2012 Nebraska at UCLA 36-30 L 2012 Nebraska vs. Wisconsin 30-27 W (Wisky not ranked but great comeback) 2012 Nebraska vs. Ohio State 63-38 L 2012 Nebraska vs. Wisconsin (Big Ten Championship) 70-31 L (Wisconsin set a record for most rushing yards in a game against us) 2013 Nebraska vs. UCLA 41-21 L 2013 Nebraska vs. Michigan St. 41-28 L 2013 Nebraska vs. Iowa 38-17 L 2014 Nebraska at Michigan St. 27-22 L 2014 Nebraska at Wisconsin 59-24 L (we also allowed Melvin Gordon to set a single game rushing record on us) 2014 Nebraska vs. Minnesota 28-24 L 2) Bo Pelini can not beat good teams. Bo lovers will ride the fact that he won 9 games in every season he coached, but look beyond the numbers. Overall, he boats a 67-27 record as a head coach at Nebraska which is very very admirable. However Bo is 40-2 against teams with a record under .500. That makes him 27-25 against teams above .500. Husker fans, really sit down and ask yourself if you are okay continuing on with a coach who wins every other game against teams with a record above .500. For me that is just not good enough. 3) Bos ability to make adjustments is poor at best. Seriously? Did you guys watch Wisconsin any of those three years or Minnesota the last two? We were beaten by two plays. Wisconsin ran the jet sweep until our cows came home. That cow being a Big Ten beatdown and a record setting day for Melvin Gordon. Last year we watched David Cobb run an Iso 20+ times to the beat of 138 yards. We should not be pushed around by Minnesota. This year Mitch Leidner (the Golden Gopher qb) ran the read option like he was playing a video game. He finished with 111 yards and 2 TDs. These are just a couple of examples, but I can not tell you how many times over the past 7 years I feel like all we needed to do was figure out how to stop one play from the opposition and we just let them keep on beating us in that way. At least make them switch it up and beat us in a different way. Or look at some of the splits. We often get rocked after half time because we think we can just come out and do the same things that we did in the first half. Good coaches recognize how they are getting beat and try to fix it. We more or less ignore it. 4) Bo trusts his friends too much. Jon Papuchis is not a good defensive coordinator and I think that Bo knows that. I mean he has to right? He is watching the same sad defense that we watch. Bad tackling, inability to contain outside runs, no pass rush. Yet, Bo is a great friend. He promotes guys that should not be promoted. 5) The facial expressions. To think they have gotten better is sad. I have said this since Bo took over. He is a great coordinator and just not a very good coach. He cannot micromanage very well, but that is besides the point. The head coach is required to be the fact of the college football program. They are supposed to be cordial with the media and fans and know how to handle their emotions. Like I said, I think Bo has made leaps and bounds in this area, but still not up to the standard a nationally known program like Nebraska does. 6) We need to move on and we can. If you think a place like Nebraska is not going to be able to hire someone because we fired a coach that has won 9 games every season you are sorely mistaken. We are one of the most prestigious job locations in the country. Great facilities, decent recruiting, good conference, the best fans in college football. We are going to get someone, and it is not going to be no scrub. We fired Solich after he won 9 games and we got an NFL coach who had been to the Super Bowl. Sure, Callahan ended up being an awful college coach, but he was one of the highest profile hires of college football that season. It is not Bo won a couple of national championships or even conference championships and we fired him after a 9 win season. Do not forget he has also lost 4 games in every season. You have to show improvement if you want to survive. Bo Pelini is the definition of stuck in a rut. So, if you are still in this with me. Congrats, I am almost done. Do not get me wrong. I love Bo Pelini. His passion and heart is unparalleled in college football and I know he is going to move on to be successful somewhere else, but so will Nebraska. Do not let this ruin your perception of the Huskers. They made an extremely difficult move, but a move that will be best for us in the end. Instead, lets focus on the brilliance that is Ameer Abdullah and the hard work he has put into this team the last four years and send him off well. Thanking him for his efforts, despite who is calling the shots in our bowl game. As always Go Big Red.
