So I saw Noah last night. Here is my reaction: 1) I went in with EVERY intention to like it. I love the Noah story. I love visually dense story-telling films (Im a big Tree of Life fan). The trailer looked great. I was expecting plenty of elaboration and fantasy-like elements to be added. I was prepared to be VERY forgiving. I was all set to come out shaking my head at the silly fundamentalists who had been trashing it (I even practiced by rolling my eyes at the links to negative reviews that scrolled by on my Facebook newsfeed). 2) I HATED the movie. I had to fight a serious urge to walk out ... more than once. 3) I could be okay with a lot of weird stuff that was in the film. I could deal with the bizarre rock-monster-fallen-angel things, I could handle the (slightly heavy-handed) environmentalist message, I could overlook how Noah gets his instructions on building the ark by tripping on hallucinogenic tea with Methuselah, and a whole lot more. But I could not deal with what they did to Noah. I could not stand it. It felt like what Peter Jackson did to Faramir but about a thousand times worse. I mean, a significant chunk of the movie felt like The Shining on the ark - with Noah as the psycho, trying to KILL TWO BABIES. 4) I never expected that Darren Aranofskys biggest problem would be that he agreed too much with Mark Driscoll (theresurgence/2014/03/24/noah-was-not-a-righteous-man). At the end of the day, both miss Genesis 6:9 and 7:1: NOAH WAS A RIGHTEOUS MAN. 5) The Noah story is (for a number of reasons) probably my favorite story in the Bible (except for Jesus, of course ...). And according to Moses (Gen 6:9), the Apostle Peter (2 Peter 2:5), the author of Hebrews (Heb 11:7), and ... well .. God (if we believe the Bible - Gen 7:1), Noah was a pretty great guy. So to see him turned into a homicidal maniac in this movie is hard. And as a Christian, I believe Noah was a real person - IS a real person. And it is upsetting to see him slandered as he is i this movie ... and I dont mean a little slandered either. Anyway - theres my two cents. I am a pretty stubborn guy and I was pretty set on liking this movie and I came out turned around 180 degrees after seeing it ... for whatever thats worth.
