So, I stayed up late to watch GODFATHER PART II from start to - TopicsExpress

So, I stayed up late to watch GODFATHER PART II from start to finish for the first time last night. I should clarify, Ive seen the film before both as a part of the GODFATHER SAGA, and also in bits and pieces I would come across on TV from time to time. But this is the first time I viewed it from opening to closing credits. And while yes, it is clearly a great film, Im afraid I do not find myself in the camp that maintains its a better film than THE GODFATHER. I did not find Michael Corleones evolution in the sequel to be as emotionally satisfying as it was in the original film. Furthermore, I dont think Al Pacinos performance in II is as good as what he gave in the first film. Although there are only hints of it, I can already start to see traces of the scene-chewing hammery he would be consumed by in a few more years. I also think Diane Keaton is kind of phoning in her performance at times in the sequel. And of course, any GODFATHER film suffers from the lack of Marlon Brando (who wasnt interested in coming back to play Vito as a younger man), as well as not having James Caans electrifying Sonny (who, after all, was killed off in the first film...although he did manage to cameo in the second). Lee Strasberg was mesmerizing as Hyman Roth, however...I loved every second he was on the screen. And Robert DeNiros effort as young Vito Corleone started good and grew even better, but he still seemed overly restrained at times.
