So, I was on my way to play practice this afternoon, and had just turned onto Broadway from Bluffton, when I heard the squeal and crash of an accident and saw the final landing place of a white car, up against a telephone pole, about 3-4 car lengths in front of me. I am now trapped in traffic. I can see several vehicles that appear to be either part of the crash or stopped to help, and there is no way around this accident. Having been a working EMT, in a previous career, I parked and went right up to the accident. The elderly gentleman in the white car was unconscious and slouched over in his seat. The car was smoking a bit and still running. I had seen and heard people calling on my way to the car, so I was not worried about that. The person in the second car had someone there and was talking. I hoped in the back seat and immediately stabilized his head. Two other ladies popped in and we all worked to get this man stable and safe till EMS arrived and took over. Besides the three of us, there were many other helpers waiting to do whatever needed to be done. We discovered our fellow, whom we were calling blue eyes, was named Richard and he was a Veteran. I hope he is OK and that he can be with us for many more days to come. Its unfortunate that it takes accidents and tragedies to remind us that there are people out there who care and are willing to help. I hope people will pay it forward every day. The world would be a much better place.
