So I watched #Noah last night and it stayed true(ish) to the biblical story and was about what I expected it would be. Though Im glad I didnt go to the theatre to see this movie, I cant really say that it was bad as much as it was just entirely uninteresting. There wasnt a black person in the entire world (not that thats surprising) or any other ethnicity besides white people for that matter, but if youve watched any major motion pictures in America, you hardly need me to tell you that. CGI plays such a dominant role in movies today that one would expect this film to be brimming to the top with it, but though it is there, not to an overwhelming degree. If you are familiar with a Bible then you already know that The Creator as he is called in this movie, has a penchant for picking the most dysfunctional people he can find to carry out great endeavors in his name and Noah, the man, is no different in this regard. The rub in this movie is that we see a man take what is perhaps the biggest leap of faith in the history of humanity while barely batting an eye and then watch as he displays exactly zero ounces of common sense or discernment in the face of a smaller, more logical miracle. Its sublimely stupefying and stultifying in its banality. Or perhaps it only appears so because, Noah being the progenitor from which we all hail, simply passed that obstinacy down to the rest of us viewing the film today. If thats the case then one would have to classify Russell Crowes performance as cinematic gold. I highly doubt that though. Ill close with a direct quote from the movies antagonist and descendant of Abels brother Cain to one of Noahs sons, Your father fills a ship with beasts while children drown. He blesses you by telling you that you must serve them. They serve us. That is the greatness of man. When the creator finished making the sky, the ground, the sea this beast.. He wasnt satisfied, he needed something greater. Something to take dominion over it and subdue it so he made us in his image. Us... Such a shame to think that after all the trouble that Noah went through at the urging of The Lord, that the very characteristic of humanity that was to be extinguished is the one that is choking the life out of everything in the real world today. I liken it to blowing up ones house to rectify a pest problem only to inspect the debris afterward and find that you missed. But surely such a thing could never happen under the care of an omniscient being right? But I digress...this is a movie review, not a philosophical discussion on the Whys behind the methods of The Creator and who am I to question such things? After all, Im only a man. Watch the movie with the understanding that it will probably elicit more criticisms than clarity if youre familiar with the story. Or pass on the film and know that regardless of what you personally believe, we live in a world where the diminished presence or absence of divinity altogether is a very real dilemma.
