So...I wrote about my thunder-phobic girl and my girl who didnt like my neighbors motorcycle. Todays post is about my boy dog. There is a section in the road in my neighborhood where the road changes height. Cars make a thump sound as they drive over it and it makes my boy flinch. I usually just try to adjust the speed of our walking so we are not at the hump when a car is coming. Today, we were pretty close to it, so I decided to be ready with a treat. I reached into my treat bag and got the treat ready as I saw the car about to hit the hump. Murphy was already looking at and sniffing the treat as the thump sound happened. And his ears went back slightly as he was eating. In my effort to get the timing right, I brought the treat out way too early. When counter conditioning, not only do we need to make sure we get the order right (scary stimulus, then treat), but we also need to not give hints that the treat is coming. So we shouldnt reach into treat bags, ruffle plastic, etc.. I knew this, but got over-zealous and did it anyway. Emily Larlham (kikopup) talks about it here https://youtube/watch?v=3PhqFdaNduo
