So, Im asking this because I know I have a lot of taekwondo practitioners here. Last night I watched a Frontline documentary on the head trauma caused by football. I realize that its probably not best to say anything negative about Taekwondo, but I ask this in hopes that some of my friends that are currently or have been what I would call the Taekwondo clergy. In my 12 years in Taekwondo, I never really understood the reason for encouraging and even rewarding head-shots. My focus as an instructor was to build intelligent leaders, but seeing people get kicked in the head always made me rethink my place in martial arts. The whole head-shots thing for me went against the idea of teaching people to be smart, because you know, the smarts are in the brain. Again, I apologize for this blasphemy, but after watching how NFL denies and pays people off to claim that there is NO correlation between head trauma and CTE (Chronic traumatic encephalopathy). I wonder if there are people in Taekwondo that raise the same issue with the Church of Taekwondo, and if theyre taken seriously. Over the years I met all breeds of men and women that think theyre tough, so Ive heard the usual argument that being tough requires that you bang your head against anything you can find, so Im well aware of that, Im hoping to hear from people that are smart.
