So Im going to share a little about the struggle of this new fitness swimming adventure I have embarked on. 1. Freestyle swimming is nowhere near as easy as people make it look. Im pretty sure I look like a dying whale floundering around trying to scare away the sharks. Im okay with this, at least for the next couple of weeks until it (hopefully...) becomes more natural. 2. When taking a breath, more often than not, I damn near drown myself. I wouldnt be surprised if one of the student lifeguards jumps in after me mistaking my sputtering for dying...or attention seeking. 3. I love the water. Its refreshing and it feels good. I honestly dont know why humans havent evolved gills yet. Water is everywhere, we are practically made of the stuff. I dont get it. 4. The swimsuit is going to have to change. I wanted to avoid the whole skin tight thing, because well... nothing is left to the imagination. After having to tie my suit so tight the indents in my hips will linger for a week just to keep it from getting yanked to my ankles when I kick off the wall, Ive decided that I just need to bite the bullet. 5. Its Winter. The air is dry. The chlorinated pool sucks all of the water out of my body. When I finish, I feel like I had a free face lift, and that the skin on my face might actually fall off at any point. Also, you might as well just stick a water hose down my throat and leave it on for a few solid minutes because I could drink more than a horse. 6. After getting out of the pool, despite soreness in just about every muscle there is, shortness of breath, water in my ears, and chlorine in my brain... it feels very satisfying. Which Im very pleased with, because we all know if I hate something, I wont do it. Its weird, but I like it, so Im not complaining. 7. By the time I get about halfway back to the dorm, I realize that I am absolutely starving. Even if it has only been a couple of hours since I ate last. My current goal is to work up to 2000 yards per swim, and Im actually looking forward to that! :)
