So Im reading the first of the Mortdecai Trilogy, Dont Point That Thing at Me, which is soon to be released as a major motion picture starring Johnny Depp and Ewan McGregor. Im only about 20 pages in, but already, this is one of the funniest things Ive ever read. Not only that, but unlike most humor, it isnt all that period specific, still seeming fresh some 40 years after being published. I can usually localize a contemporary novels writing to within 5 years or so in just a few pages ( and often none contemporaneous writing, just from style and language usage). With this book, minus a few year specific details, it could have been written any time from the late 60s to the mid 80s (it was actually published in 1973). Im now greatly looking forward to the film, in hopes that Depps... Unique... talent, can capture this equally unique character, as well as the trailer would seem to suggest.
