So....Im walking to work and I pass a delivery truck with the corporate name The Gander Company. Logo has a male goose, of course, ha ha ha and all. Then I thought about the term, take a gander over there, meaning to look. We all know what that means...but then suddenly I think...where the hell did THAT term come from? Did people carry male geese with them when they went to look for things? For protection, maybe? Was it a common thing to carry a male goose, much like tying an onion to ones belt was the style at the time? I did find this: This slangy idiom, dating from the early 1900s, presumably came from the verb gander , meaning stretch ones neck to see, possibly alluding to the long neck of the male goose. So...theres your vocabulary lesson for the day, kids. The more you know....
