So... Ive been in a discussion this week via email forum with a RC priest, and some of his followers who have been watching were very put off by the fact that I do not refer to him as father or any other title (he also holds a PhD in theology), and theyve accused me of just being disrespectful to him because Im an atheist, although Ive shown him no disrespect whatsoever. In fact, weve both been quite cordial. I had to explain to them that I simply do not do titles. I call him Don (his first name). I told them that if I ever got the chance to meet Richard Dawkins, I would not call him professor, doctor, or anything else but Richard. For me, it is not a sign of disrespect. Its simply that I call people by the names they were given, and not by appointment or degrees theyve earned. As a sidenote, the priest doesnt mind at all. He understands my point. But I do note that those observing the debate are looking for anything at all they can use to call me disrespectful, evil, or any other adjective that puts me in a bad light...
