So Ive just heard through the intertubes that Bay Street Coffee in Fremont is no more. Oh sure, its still a coffee shop—going by the charmingly inept name Bean Scene—but this bums me out. Growing up in Fremont, the big brick building at the corner of Washington, Bay, Fremont Blvd, Fremont Blvd (again) and Union St was always a black hole of failed businesses. It seemed a new prospector moved in every other week, only to disappear just as quickly. Bay Street Coffee was the first permanent business that seemed to take root in that hulking, no-doubt rather-earthquake-unsafe structure (the small Broadway West repertory theater on the upper floor soon followed). After enough time, it was clear that Bay Street was there to stay. I have many fond memories of hanging out on the back patio, the absurdly large couches, and the tiny tables by the floor-to-ceiling windows. Its been ten years now since I moved away from my home town (if you can honestly call Fremont a town) and Bay Street was always a touchstone for me, a reminder that something I cared about was still there, appropriately anchored in a mass of bricks and mortar that seemed to have defied the Five-Corner-Curse and gone on to last forever. Oh well. Just a reminder that, eventually, everything changes and nothing is permanent. Farewell, BSC.
