So Ive met hundreds upon hundreds of people in my life especially from being in the military but today I have to say was one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life. While shopping with my Japanese friend in the Japanese super market I found my self standing next to a older (much older) Japanese man after a few seconds he taped me and started talking to me in broken Japanese English. Asking me if I was military I said yes and he replied with me too I smiled and said thats awesome then he pointed at his hat which said Iwo Jima and some Japanese writing on it. My mouth immediately dropped. For one of the first times in my life I didnt know what to say to him. He asked you know? I said I do. He proceed to tell me that him and his brother were there together and from what I gathered his brother died there. And after I stood there for roughly 10 min talking to him and the whole time I wanted to cry like this old man from WWII. Is telling me how he lost his brother fighting American forces back in 1945 and I have no clue what to say and so I just said that I was sorry he wasnt mad or rude or anything hell he smiled and not you Im pretty sure he meant that it wasnt my fault then he went on his way. Ive been here for Almost 4 years now and Im still amazed by the Japanese culture how respectful and nice they are and how forgiving. Theyve taught me a lot and these things I can teach others. Slowly trying to change the world...
