So... This morning I find that many of my gay friends have unfriended me. This because I dared disagree with their standing about Facebooks requirement that everyone, that is with no exception for drag queens or rape survivors, be required to use their legal name on their Facebook accounts. Wow...talk about intolerance. I had the gall to not only disagree but to suggest that there might be many other issues remaining more important to the acceptance and advancement of DQ and LGBTQ individuals. In an online discussion last night I tried being a calm and respectful voice of support and reason and found myself being scorned and informed that I couldnt possibly understand what it is like to be in their shoes; therefore my opinion was invalid. As I have said before, I am neither DQ nor a member of the LGBTQ population. However, I consider myself to be DQ and LGBTQ friendly. And supportive. And loving. I have been dissed for being a straight white woman. In the past I have asked question, not to mock anyone, only to gain more understanding of the plight which LGBTQ individuals endure. Those who kindly and patiently answered my questions have helped me understand more than I could ever have by reading a book. I am grateful for the understanding. Im tired of the attack and of having to defend myself when it ought not be necessary. Apparently, you are right, you who scorned and scoffed and ultimately unfriended me. Being a fellow sufferer of the Human Condition does not necessarily qualify me as an ally. Nor does my proven acceptance, love and desire to socially advance LGBTQ individuals gain me any sort of acceptance for who I am.
