So Victorias Secret is opening two stores in Cairo. I spotted the coming soon shop in Cairo Festival City and a week later billboards started popping all over the place. Its opening under Al Shaya (H&M, Payless, Starbucks, Mothercare, American Eagle, etc.) which will be interesting to see how they handle this. Since Al Shaya photoshop all models pictures in catalogs and store posters to dress them up modestly. A woman in a bikini will turn into a woman in stretch pants and tight top. And if a model is of color they dont think she needs any photoshopping (true story). What will Al Shaya do with VS? So far all the billboards and coming soon signs show blown up models faces. Al Shaya not only introduced to Egypt a distorted version of modernism in the form of gulf-style censorship, they also introduced distorted consumer policies. Try to return anything you bought from their stores for cash. You cant. You can only get store credit on their card to use in any of their chain of stores. A practice that is clearly against consumer rights but they did get a special permission from consumer protection agency to do that. Meanwhile, here is something I never thought Id see, very conservatively dressed Adriana Lima and Alessandra Ambrosio announcing VS coming to Cairo.
