So Wifey wanted to take me out for my birthday dinner last - TopicsExpress

So Wifey wanted to take me out for my birthday dinner last night, and without hesitation I chose Harveys Umhlanga. Having got to know the man behind the machine, I just knew that it will be a memorable night out. Upon arrival, I was welcomed by the charming maitred, and we chose to whet our appetites with some delectable cocktails in Harrys Bar first. Well, let the show begin, we thought, and what a show it was! Personally recommended by Andrew himself, the barman flared two showstopping cocktails together, which set the tone for a great evening. (Do try the Road to Tanqueray and the Asian Fusion cocktails...heavenly!) Wifey went for the Shredded Peking Duck starter and I had the fabled Prawn & Angelhair pasta. 10/10! The Newton Johnson 2012 Pinot Noir was the perfect accompaniment to the two great dishes. Not once did we have to look around for our suave waiter Carl to fill our glasses, and this is where Harveys score another bonus point - the service is attentive, but still manages to stay unintrusive. For mains, I was in two minds (three actually!) between the tried and tested Traditional Duck Confit or the signature Lamb Bordellaise dishes, but felt like a steak, so I ordered the rump with a marrow bone on the side. It arrived perfectly medium to rare with a lovely crust on the outside of the beautifully matured beef. Wifey had the lamb cutlets served with Beans Provençal which she raved about as well. If I have to be brutally honest, the dish was a bit too tomatoey for my personal taste, but hey, she loved it! We just had to have another round of those cocktails, and yes, I tried the Pink Mojito, which I loved. ( ja ja, I know, real men dont drink pink drinks...;-) We shared the Creme Brûlée with stunning homemade Shiraz ice cream and a blueberry compote on the side, and it was a perfect way to end a perfect evening. Andrew Draper is a maestro conductor fine tuning this orchestra into the most beautiful sounds and harmonies, and I will always recommend Harveys Umhlanga to anyone looking for a special night out way above the norm, and a venue and team that will always try (and succeed!) to exceed expectations.
