So, a friend of mine sees The Walking Dead as an overt glorification of traditional right-wing values (family as fundamental, division of male/female roles where men lead and women follow, young boy learning how to be a man etc.). However, I see it as an ongoing critique of these values and how they are making less and less sense in the contemporary world. The story is still told from the conservative point of view, where the perceived threat of progressive politics is represented by the living dead and the living are simply trying to avoid being cornered and transformed by what they see as an unthinking horde. The role of the male is scrutinized, as each of the male characters are trying to balance their ideals with the circumstances they encounter and often fail to do so (meanwhile, many of the female characters have adapted more successfully). Bearing in mind that we might both be overthinking this (and that theres no reason to suggest that the writers intend it to be in any way allegorical), are you convinced by either view?
