So a question regarding those who practice early sidesword systems and german rappier in particular. When looking for a simple, ambidextrous, economy style trainer for such a style of sword, would you prefer a simple cross and a side ring with no knuckle guard as seen in this plate from a fechtschule depiction by Tobias Stimmer, or would you prefer a simple cross with a knuckle guard and no side ring as seen in some plates from Sainct Didier? I would obviously prefer side rings on both sides with a knuckle guard and finger guards as a basic all around all style foil, but I am looking at this issue from a simplicity of manufacture and cost effectiveness standpoint.
