So every year I send a mass thank you out to all of the people who are so kind to send birthday wishes my way, and I apologize for being a dork when it comes to returning the wishes. Well, here is a very different kind of thank you...a little ramblings about my birthday: So a 13th birthday comes with some Fridays thrown in, but I was born on a Sunday so I think that should balance everything out. But this day has always had some kind of kick to it. I remember one Friday birthday where my dad was stuck at work until VERY late, then his motorcycle went on the fritz so we had to tow him home, which delayed my birthday celebration until it was almost bedtime...but that was the year I got my cassette tape recorder and got to record myself singing Olivia Newton-John songs. So Cool! I have celebrated many times with gymnastics friends, as the date seems to VERY often coincide with the USA Gymnastics National Congress...so thats been cool. None so cool as the one in Bregenz, Austria, sitting at the floating stage on Lake Constance, watching the opera in 28 degree weather with gymnastics people from at least 25 different countries...we were preparing for the World Gymnaestrada. But today may have topped them all. Sorry, not because of all the lovely notes! I got to start the day dropping Mia Lord off at the first day of her sophomore year at a new school away from some very good friends. She went at it like a trooper (HOPEFUL). Then I had breakfast with Nora Campbell who has always inspired me and believed in me and never misses my birthday. (WONDERFUL). Then I spent the mid-afternnon out on the lake with Sue Hilliker and Tom Hilliker (AKA mom and dad) just enjoying the sun and swim (DELIGHTFUL). Picked up an emotionally drained daughter, carted her off to gymnastics, and headed to the park to read and relax before I was supposed to teach at the gym (fairly UNEVENTFUL). The grand finale (so far) was that while I was napping (RESTFUL), a man rode his bicycle full steam into the back of my car and sustained for sure some type of head injury. (DREADFUL) I awoke with no idea what was happening...another gentleman witnessed the crash and helped me make sense of what was going on...he calmed me down, we called 911, the man was talking and awake as they took him to the hospital. Im not sure how I will ever find out if he is OK...and my back windshield shattered and sent glass all the way to the front windshield. I think Im writing this to try and calm myself down. But I cant help wondering WHY this happened and what Im supposed to learn now. For the past two years I have been riding a crazy wave with Mary Kim-Garrity of BioCored and being dealt more and more challenging situations to handle. And my horoscope for this morning... Struggle. Without it, you would never fully realize your potential and do the work youre meant to do. Thanks mom and dad for EVERYTHING today. What a ride!
