So far (knock on wood) today has been positive. Lauren made it - TopicsExpress

So far (knock on wood) today has been positive. Lauren made it through yet another xray, and the results convinced the doctors that she needs just one more day in the hospital. Her lungs are still a little cloudy and her labs showed a drop in her potassium. They added one more diuretic and another med that helps her body retain potassium instead of flushing it out with the increased urine output. She will have another blood draw and xray tomorrow morning. If things look good, then we get discharged tomorrow afternoon. If not, then we just get cozy and wait another day. The best part about today is that she had a pretty good night of rest and has been sleeping peacefully most of the day. She had a solid two hours where she was awake and generally content. During that time, I was able to pick her up out of the crib without her screamimg in fear. Progress!!! She had another swallow study with the speech therapist and was able to drink 3 ml without throwing up. Unfortunately, this also made her reflux badly and she had a congested cough to follow for a good hour. Next I attempted to change her very full diaper. Due to the added diuretic, she has been peeing like crazy. During the diaper change, she peed all over the bed, including her pulse oximeter and telemetry wires. While I was holding her and the nurse was changing the sheets, she then peed all over my leg, my feet and the floor! Meanwhile, she was happy as a clam and even had a little smile on her face. As messy as this was, it was nice to have a typical baby experience. After cleaning her up, I held her in my arms and our awesome nurse carried her NG tube box and followed me so I could walk through the halls with her. She fell fast asleep by the time we got back to the room, so we tucked her into bed. About 10 minutes later, I walked over to check on her to discover that she was wide awake, but just happily looking out the doorway and into the hallway where people were walking by. This was the first time we have seen her awake and content without needing to stand next to her and keep her calm. More progress! This afternoon I also got to hook up our new NG feeding pump to Laurens tube. It was quite easy and will be a breeze to use at home. The hard part will be trying to move Lauren around while either holding her portable pouch for the pump or dragging the pole around with us everywhere we go. I forsee many mishaps for this reason. Thank you for your continued prayers and please continue to pray that Lauren makes more progress, both physically and emotionally.
