So guess what? Dragon Warrior II is now available (with updated graphics!) has been released on Andriod/iOS. I think this is great! I love some good old DW2. (and incoming a huge rant referencing ton of series wide history that might be too nerdy for casual fans of the game or people who dont care about gaming history at all) Aaaaanyway, so the subtitle of the game has changed... It is now called Luminaries of the Legendary Line. While the game IS about the descendants of Loto and them being heroes in a world he had to save, the original subtitle of the game was actually in reference to the cult that Hargon served, you know, where Malroth comes from. (Yes, except the first game of the series - all of the other ones actually had subtitles! We didnt start seeing subtitles officially until DQ8 on the PS2 with Journey of the Cursed King and on all remakes and releases after that.) Of course, all the translated versions we got here censored out the fact that Hargon was even in a cult and summoned Malroth to begin with, so I suppose the typical gamer wouldnt notice it. My hopes for the newly updated release is that nothing is censored this time. That would make it worth paying full price for. Both the original game on the NES and the GBA port left out sizable chunks of story... I have played the SNES remake with a fan translation, and its really good. Not as good as, say, the next game in the series, Dragon Warrior III - but it does stand on its own as a great game from its time period. Then again, I have an obsession with jRPGs made in the 80s. Inspired by tabletop and PC games like Wizardry and Ultima, throw in some neat manga-styled art, and make the controls simple so players not used to computers could not be so daunted... ahhhhh! I feel like an RPG Historian sometimes.
