So happy to report that Kalis ANC (white blood count) more than doubled last night . . . going from 70 yesterday to 220 today! She surprised us with this big jump after the slow yo-yo- gains last week. Following are the ANC from each day, starting with Sat night, December 13th, in the ER. Saturday 0 Sunday 0 Monday 30 Tuesday 10 Wednesday 0 Thursday 30 Friday 90 Saturday 70 Today 220 Dr. Dunsmore told us yesterday that Kalis ANC needs to be 500 or above for her to be discharged. With yesterday dropping back to 70, it did not seem likely Kali would make it home for Christmas. This morning Dr. Dunsmore said that other numbers from labs are improving also, including platelet counts. For this reason, she will let Kali go home tomorrow if her ANC is still 200 or above. We discussed why these counts go up and down, and are aware it could drop again. But 220!!! What a jump! Needless to say, we are thrilled to learn her bone marrow is recovering from treatment and producing more healthy cells again! Kalis sore in the corner of her lips is also healing since her neutrophils are coming back, making talking and eating a much more pleasant experience. I think at least 3 other parents told me yesterday that the yo-yo of unexpected ups and downs here at UVA are emotionally draining. I totally understand, yet, Kali has remained in stable condition all through this stay, and we are not dealing with a life-threatening situation right now. Our love and prayers are with friends who are going through deep waters at this time.
