So heres a topic I hope will generate some discussion - Im also posting on the WrestleCentre group to see what they say. With the ease with which people can view local independent wrestling now - with IHW and Wrestle Centre being on Bell and LCW, I believe, still being on NTV - I cant help but notice the amount of flip flopping wrestlers do from heel to babyface as they move from promotion to promotion. As someone who has been watching for almost 35 years, and as someone who gets it, this doesnt bother me a bit. it actually shows the versatility of a lot of the workers to work different styles in front of different crowds. Heres my concern, though: When I was a kid watching the likes of The Cuban Assassin, Leo Burke, Bulldog Bob Brown - and in the big leagues, guys like Junkyard Dog, Randy Savage, Hulk Hogan and the like - there were always good guys and bad guys. There was never any question as to who I was SUPPOSED to cheer for (who I did cheer for was another matter). I watched a few episodes of IHW and Wrestlecentre with my 6 year old - who is just starting to catch the wrestling bug. Someone like Markus Burke, worked heel at both places and was clearly identifiable as a bad guy to my kid. He then saw Riddick, Titus, and XXL (among others) playing two completely different characters in both promotions. To say he was confused would be an understatement. I understand this was commonplace when workers wrestled all over the place for different audiences that would never meet and you get booked how you get booked. I guess my concern is whether or not this is killing the magic of it a little bit for the next generation of fans, and should the promotions - knowing they share a lot of the same TV audiences - maybe change booking practices a little? Face it, theres nothing like believing the product is real. You will never enjoy wrestling more than when you first discovered it. Im worried were taking that away from the most important fans - the kids - by throwing characters out the window from promotion to promotion. Thoughts?
