So, heres a movie to rent that youve probably never seen: Shock Treatment. A lot of people have seen Rocky Horror Picture Show, by Richard OBrien, but not as many people have seen the film he released after that, Shock Treatment, featuring some of the same actors. It was marketed as a sequel to RHPS, but it isnt. The thing about Shock Treatment, as weird and flawed as it is, is that its incredibly prescient. Made in the early 1980s, it predicts the rise of reality TV shows and the effect it will have on the peoples lives involved in it, in an over-the-top, parodic form. At the time it was a weird movie because it seemed so completely unrealistic. Who would watch a TV show that just consisted of watching people live their lives?? Now its a weird movie because its a scarily dead-on parody of what we see on TV all the time now.
