So heres my 2cents on da election. Growing up, people my generation were encouraged to go to school & learn all we can & come bk to help our people. I remember great leaders & spiritual leaders saying dis n ceremonies performed & at social gatherings. Some of us have done dis & returned & try to be humble everyday. However, upon returning bk to the rez, it feels like we continue to be questioned on how much Navajo we still are, how fluent we are, who our family is, who r we married to, etc. Its not always positive n trying to help ur people. At times it feels like ur trying to prove urself. I went thru dis & have seen my own relatives turn der bks. My thought is a young person has returned to help his people, but he is being questioned left & right. How fluent can the Navajo language be & according to who? Not even KTNN or other Navajo radio announcers r fluent. Most of da Navajo language we speak r slags & borrowed & I think Ive heard Navajo lang professors say dis from Dine College. I feel for da people dat r making claims & saying he isnt good enough. May I also say hes a veteran as well. What happen to all da claims to respect ur veterans & honor da young people because dey will lead us. He has da experience, da compassion, & da strength to do da work. I believe hes n da right place to honor his elders & work hard for dem. My question is, if da Navajo Nation does not want young people to return educated & make a difference because their Navajo speaking is not strong enough, then we shouldnt be encouraging education & making it look glamorous to da children dat der people will be supportive. I feel jealously is da issue here. DA individuals dat filed da claim need to get over themselves & be supportive. Rather than complain, dey should offer to help him become fluent if der so concerned. As a matter of fact, after 4 years n being n office he may surprise us all & become fluent to da standards dat des two want him to be. Whether he is allowed to run or not, at some point a young person will need to be given da opportunity to lead his/her people. If Joe Shirley is elected, then he will hide behind his bodyguards again. Asking for a salary for his wife & being selective with who he wants to talk to. I have my experiences n working with him & his wife & ders a lot dey need to improve n der customer service. Im young & have invested a lot n my education. My Navajo may not be fluent, but im determined to learn more each day. Maybe dis is lesson for us to understand dat communication is missing. Speaking Navajo is one, but also to respect others & not judge them. If u chose to judge, remember to clean out ur closet before u do this because someone will put u n ur place. Dont make fun of da young people when dey try to speak da language, as well. No offense intended, just thinking out loud.
