So how about that FFXV trailer. I have to say it rekindled my excitement for the game where once there was only tired disillusionment. I went from please stop breaking my heart with these gilded atrocities bearing the Final Fantasy name, to, hey, I might have to get a PS4. Though I couldnt have said that had I not picked up FFXIII-2 recently and given it another chance. FFXIII really ruined Final Fantasy for me for a long, long time, and as much as I hate to say it because I love it so much, so did the shortcomings in FFXII. I love FFXII for reaching new artistic heights for the series, but the excessively overcomplicated gameplay and an inconsistent plot severely undermined what could have been a flawless game. Unfortunately, Squares newfound penchant for excessive detail carried over into the mythology of FFXIII, making it difficult to discern who or what the FalCie are, why some of them are evil, why Cocoon and Pulse hate each other, etc., and then on top of that, casting some of the most psychologically complex characters to date in a Final Fantasy game to work out their own personal issues while trying to stop the manipulation of humankind by malevolent higher beings. And WORST OF ALL, they took away our towns!!! Sacrilege! lol. (But really, it was.) I actually had to let go of the expectation that I would be playing the Final Fantasy games I fell in love with in order to appreciate FFXIII-2. On its own merit, its a fun, flexible little adventure with gaping plot holes and a terrible ending. But I enjoyed it. FFXV seems to carry all the stylistic hallmarks of the XIII trilogy, in fact looking very similar to Kingdom Hearts in some ways: open world design, the ridiculously huge swords, the ridiculously huge enemies, the stylized action, the cryptic dialogue hinting at a convoluted plot, the freakishly realistic character models, and an incredible orchestral score (I have already transcribed that piano intro lol), and Ive come to accept that this is what a Final Fantasy game is now. Its not going to blow my mind the way previous FF games used to, but I think its definitely worth checking out. Im uneasy about Nomuras absence, but only time will tell.
