So how do you review a remake of (in my opinion) the best movie - TopicsExpress

So how do you review a remake of (in my opinion) the best movie ever made? Well I’ll start by judging on its own merits, its a really good film, well directed with a great plot, its well acted although Joel Kinnarman (The Killing) is merely adequate in the roll of Alex Murphy Gary Oldman is excellent as ever (yet to be in a bad film although Tinker, Tailor was a cure for insomnia). The action & special effects are superb & its a real good two hours of entertainment & with a 12A rating my kids loved it. Ok now lets rip it to pieces compared to the original, compared to the original the movie is completely humourless but I think it was a wise decision by director José Padilha to emulate the originals bleak outlook on American culture & consumerism would have been a mistake, there are brief interludes with Samual L Jackson playing a an over the top political tv journalist which tries & fails to add to the social commentary of the original. The plot is similar but nowhere near as good as the original & the script? Well you won’t be quoting anything from this when you talk about it to your friends when the original has one of the most quotable scripts ever & the characters are not as memorable. Also although it made it accessible to a younger audience the 12A rating does take away from the grittiness of the original because although it was a sci fi movie it was actually an ultra violent, gritty, black comedy thriller with a great story & plot. So definitely worth watching, great entertainment but for Robo nerds like me just try & forget the original, not easy though 6.5/10
