So, if anyone is interested I am going to share my experience at Chipotle in South Portland. I have just shared it with their corporate office as well. Lauryn and I sat down to eat. A moment later a young man in a Chipotle shirt walked out of the bathroom carrying a toilet plunger and carried it THROUGH the kitchen/food area and into a back room. Less than 30 seconds later he came out of that back room carrying a floor squeegee and returned to the bathroom. He carried the dripping squeegee back through the kitchen area and into the back room, again reemerging less than 30 seconds later. This time he was pushing a trash can. He pushed the trash can out onto the restaurant floor and went back into the kitchen area. He picked up two different pans (one with meat on it) and moved them to different counters, and then also moved a box of plastic wrap. He then grabbed a pair of rubber gloves, put them on and began working with the food. He never once washed his hands during any of this. I got the attention of another young man and asked who the manager was. He said he was one of the managers. So I explained to him what I had just watched. He walked away and talked to the unwashed kid. Then he came back to me and said, He says he washed his hands twice in the back room. I talked to him and there isnt anything else I can do. So I am supposed to believe that in between plunging a toilet and squeegeeing a floor he stopped to washed his hands twice, but after touching a trash can he went right to touching food without a second thought? First of all, there was not enough time for him to have washed his hands either of the two times he went back in the back room. He was in there for 30 seconds at most each time. Secondly, after dragging the trashcan to the restaurant floor, he went immediately to the food area and began touching things, without going anywhere near the visible hand washing sink. And yes, he did eventually put gloves on but he did so with dirty hands touching the gloves. And finally, a Manager telling me, I talked to him, nothing else I can do. is far from acceptable!
