So, if yall havent noticed prices everywhere in Colorado on pretty much everything just increased. I just got back from Chik-Fil-A where I bought my lunch and their menu prices went up. I saw the franchise owner was there and I decided to have an economics conversation with him. It went like this. Me: Hi how are you doing today Sir, I noticed that your Menu prices increased across the board, does this have anything to do with Colorado raising its minimum wage? Him: Hi its a pleasure to meet you. Yes, our prices increased because of the increase in minimum wage. When we have to pay out more money we have to increase our prices to cover that loss. Me: This is why I dont support increasing the minimum wage because when the minimum wage increases it increases the price of everything and then the folks who cried for the minimum wage increase start crying for another minimum wage increase. Take the $15/hr minimum wage protesters for example, if minimum wage was $15/hr youd likely replace your cashiers with touchscreen ordering systems and find a way to automate your food preparement process, am I correct? Him: Yes, if Minimum wage was $15/hr we would have no other choice but to switch over to the touchscreen ordering systems and look at finding a way to reduce our costs by automating our food preparation process. If folks want to earn more money they need to learn marketable skills for higher paying jobs. This minimum wage increase is tied directly to the Consumer Price Index. It isnt about helping people earn more money it is all about the state trying to generate more tax revenue. Me: That is what I think as well, Fast Food isnt supposed to be a career unless you are a franchise owner or a manager. It is supposed to be a stepping stone for highschoolers and college students to prove that they can hold a job and are dependable before going on to better jobs. Him: You are absolutely correct.
