So in my British Literature class, we were talking about the book Paradise Lost which is very interesting. Similar to C.S. Lewiss Screwtape Letters, Paradise Lost is a book from the perspective of the fall of Satan and his angels plotting little schemes to get back at God for sending them to Hell. Our discussion was getting interesting because the topic and free will got brought up. Now the author believed that God could perceive the future, but he did not dictate peoples fate, which was very controversial at that time. My teacher after establishing this says that she doesnt believe in a god that can predict the future and allow free will simultaneously. It soon got awkwardly quiet as she asked what others thought. I raised my hand and said politely that I disagreed with her, and I began to explain to her, Imagine if you had a child. Now you know for a fact that this child is not perfect and will mess up eventually, but as a parent, you dont force them to obey. You give them that choice. Now that choice can come with consequences- she cut me off with her giggle, not because she thought I was funny, but because she realized she was wrong and wanted to move quickly from her embarrassment. Im telling you this not to portray any pride, but to encourage students to speak up and help people who have misconceptions of God and to help them understand who He truly is.
