So, in terms of topics particular to both grooming and speciesism/veganism, I am wondering specifically about how eggs fit into this particular concept. Not only are they an excellent source of healthy dietary fat and protein (when the animals are healthy) not to mention vitamins and minerals, but they can definitely be used in a variety of grooming products as well. For the sake of discussion, lets make a few assumptions. In this particular instance, I am not speaking about eggs from cruelly-kept factory farmed chickens. I dont own chickens now, but I have in the past and when I do eat eggs, it is from people who keep chickens pastured and with respect. Lets say I have a sizable plot of land. On this land, I build a coop and bring some chickens there to stay. They like the coop - they are not held captive there and still they come home at night to its safety - and on the land they find all the food they need to thrive. They keep pests away from my garden and spend their days happily wandering about in the outside. In winter, the coop I have built helps to keep them warm when they cannot be outside to forage. Healthy hens produce eggs at an average rate of almost one per day for several years, depending on the climate, light exposure and protein availability for them. They do so regardless of the presence of a rooster, so if I dont have a male chicken on the farm, the eggs will all be unfertilized. The chickens may desire to eat the shells to regain some of the calcium lost during laying, but they would much rather eat bugs and grasses than white and yolk. I do not believe this relationship to be in any way speciesist. Thoughts?
