For all of you who want to know what Aquaponics is and what we plan on doing at the farm- read on weve copied it below for you... Do you enjoy growing your own veg? Want less weeding and less pests? Want to learn about a type of agriculture that uses less than 1% of the water used by traditional growing methods? Want the best herbs and salad crops youve ever tasted? Look no further! Here at Old Quarry Farm we are building what we hope will be the UKs, and possibly Europes, largest Aquaponic farm in the remains of a disused quarry. Like most people in the UK you may be wondering what Aquaponics is. In its simplest form it is just like a pond. Fish in the pond eat food and excrete waste products. These waste products are broken down by friendly bacteria which enables them to be absorbed by plants which helps keep the water clean. In Aquaponics the fish are in tanks and the water from these tanks is filtered through grow beds containing the friendly bacteria and crops before returning clean to the fish tank. As we grow we will establish several growhouses to house the Aquaponics systems, a training facility, and heritage orchard amongst other things. Our aim is to be as environmentally sustainable as possible whilst producing delicious food that youll want to eat every day.
