So its Thanksgiving... You know how thankful I am for my mom, Violet Bishop, who taught us humor, art, creativity, as she could do anything from cooking to sewing, from brilliant hand lettering to taxi driving with 4 kids, 3 bass fiddles and 1 cello. Im also thankful for my brother, Boyce W. Wyrick, who spent every summer acting out pirate scenes in the sprinklers with his eye patch and each Easter chasing 3 little girls Easter hats down Birmingham Street in the warm yet brisk West Texas wind. Lets not forget my sister, Inez Wyrick, who at about age 5 developed the neighborhood piano game that introduced all the musical and non-musical kids in the hood to ear training as we delighted in raiding our moms kitchen junk drawers for expensive and mysterious prizes to be redistributed to the kids who mastered the sounds on the keyboards and taught Karla and I to play the 2 keyboarded organ in the living room...Karla and I on the keyboards, Inez laying on the floor playing the bass peddles, of course! Im thankful for my sister Karla for making sure Mom sewed up all the lost and unloved stuffed animals she found while dumpster diving in the back alleys on Birmingham Street in Amarillo, Texas. She made me look normal. And I am also thankful that Mom and Dad raised us kids in a home of great music...classical and jazz and other kinds of music that Dad preferred not to deal with... To Dad who built a big Barbecue House (and slumber party hut) in the back yard and mastered the art of St. Louis BBQ ribs.. who had jam sessions late into the night ( we got to sneak into the hall with our blankets and listen to for hours), who somehow managed to catch baby jack rabbits and bring them home from his day job.. and who taught us that its ok to make a living by playing gigs...lots of them was best. And now, I have Harold Nordby who is the Steady Eddie of life... my wonderful kids, Carrie and Krister, my son in law, Eric and my 2 grandboys who I miss everyday....unless theyre with me..which is kind of rare since they live in Colorado... So... Im thankful for family and friends. Heres the only video I seen of my dad playing. Lubbock Tex. 1996. Filmed by a visiting Brit, I believe.. my dad is playing the piano. You gotta wait for it!!! haha Counting my riches today.
