So, just got home a little while ago from taking my ASE Master - TopicsExpress

So, just got home a little while ago from taking my ASE Master re-certification tests (all 8 sections) and passed with flying colors, as I always have. 93.63 average score- 3 100s, 3 in the 90s, an 88 and 84 being the lowest. For those who dont know, ASE Certification testing has always been optional. A way for technicians to prove out their knowledge and capability. *Begin Rant* Some states, like Michigan, require annual licensure to legally collect an income in certain fields (automotive being one of them). Michigan does offer their own testing, for a nominal fee... each section has its own expiration date, but the license must be renewed annually for $20. Yep, the tech pays for the licensing and Michigan tests out of their own pocket... I have yet to know an employer actually reimburse for those expenses. If the technician chooses to take the significantly more expensive and more challenging ASE tests, Michigan will accept those passing scores in lieu of taking the state tests (which are less expensive and easier to pass). Now heres the rub, and the point Im getting at; SOME employers (particularly NAPA Car Care Centers) actually -supposedly- REQUIRE at least one ASE Certified tech be on the payroll in order to reap the benefits of displaying the NAPA brand, signage and advertising. What used to be optional for the tech is mandatory at certain facilities. So... guess who not only pays $20/year to Michigan state, but also has to pay for $135 of 5-year ASE tests to be taken on their own time at a location thats a 30 minute drive away? You guessed it... the tech who sees no financial benefit for being ASE certified over just MI state. Dont even get me started on what I think about paying state income taxes on top of paying for permission, in the form of annual licensing, to even hold a skilled labor job to begin with. *End Rant* I think there will be changes for me (again) in 2015
